How To Add A Picture In Infobox Wikia

If an article already has an infobox at the tiptop correct, then the usual place for the article's first flick is inside the infobox. This page describes how to add that moving-picture show. Confusingly, the proper syntax to practise this varies from one infobox to another.

This page assumes that the pic has already been uploaded to Wikipedia or to Wikimedia Commons; see Wikipedia:Uploading images.

Using three or four parameters [edit]

In these infoboxes, the epitome information is divide into three or 4 different parameters. This is the syntax used by {{Infobox person}}, {{Infobox officer}}, {{Infobox sportsperson}} and others. Here are the image parameters for {{Infobox person}}:

{{Infobox person | image                     =  | image_upright             =  | alt                       =  | explanation                   =  }}
  • image is the proper noun of the paradigm, abc.jpg, xpz.png, 123.gif, etc. Practice non include the File: or Image: prefix, do not enclose the name in [[brackets]], merely do think to include the filename extension.
  • image_upright should normally be left blank, and then that the size defaults to the size set in a user's preferences.
  • alt should exist set to a clarification of the image for visually impaired readers. Come across WP:ALT. Do non use this for some other copy of the caption or of the article title, equally the reader volition already be aware of these.
  • caption, if gear up, displays just beneath the image. Recall that the person'due south name is typically displayed but above the image anyhow, so only include a caption if it has something actress to say. It may exist helpful to include the date or identify of the photograph.

Example [edit]

Jimmy Wales

Jimmy Wales Fundraiser Appeal edit.jpg

Wales in 2008

{{Infobox person |proper name=Jimmy Wales |epitome=Jimmy Wales Fundraiser Appeal edit.jpg |caption=Wales in 2008 }}

A existent example would accept other parameters as well.

Variations [edit]

Some infoboxes use a syntax similar to this, just with different names for the parameters. For example, {{Infobox anthology}} uses "Encompass" instead of "epitome" and "Caption" instead of "caption".

Using one or 2 parameters [edit]

In these infoboxes, the image information is combined into only one or two parameters. This is the syntax used by {{Infobox football game club}}, {{Infobox military conflict}} and others. Here are the image parameters for {{Infobox football social club}}:

{{Infobox football club | image                     = | caption                   =  }}
  • image is a complete image placement specification as described in the Picture tutorial or at Wikipedia:Extended epitome syntax. The size should typically exist set to 200px, and the image should be centred. Alt text should exist included for visually impaired readers.
  • caption is displayed beneath the prototype.

Example [edit]

Football gild

Infobox Rovers

A white football with black pentagons

The logo introduced in 2006

{{Infobox football club |clubname    = Infobox Rovers |image       = [[File:Football.svg|200px|center|alt=A white football game]] |caption     = The logo introduced in 2006 }}

Troubleshooting [edit]

I can't piece of work out which set of parameters to use [edit]

When y'all edit the commodity, you should be able to find the text "{{Infobox" somewhere nearly the top. That line, without the pair of curly brackets, is the name of the infobox (If there's a vertical bar "|", and so cease before that).

If you've constitute "Infobox connector", every bit an example, then type "Template:Infobox connector" into the Wikipedia search box to brandish the template definition and documentation.

The template documentation is unclear or missing [edit]

It happens. When you are on the template definition page, select "What links here" from within the Toolbox section on the left-paw side. This displays a listing of manufactures that use the aforementioned infobox; some of these may help you work out what to exercise.

My image is displayed, just with actress square brackets and other nonsense [edit]

This typically happens when "image = [[File:.....]]" is used within an infobox that expects "image = just the proper name".

[edit]

Example chef

William Orpen Le Chef de l'Hôtel Chatham, Paris.jpg

A typical result from this kind of fault

This occurs when the "pollex" keyword is included in the file specification.

{{Infobox person |name    = Example chef |image   = [[File:William Orpen Le Chef de l'Hôtel Chatham, Paris.jpg|200px|pollex|heart]] <!-- Error --> |caption = A typical consequence from this kind of error }}

I'grand seeing the image proper noun as apparently black text [edit]

This may be because you take used the "prototype = only the proper name" syntax inside an infobox that expects "prototype = [[File:.....]]".

My edits to a parameter are ignored [edit]

This could be a sign that the parameter proper name is not i of those recognized by the infobox that you are using. Y'all should also cheque that the parameter is non being specified more once, as merely the concluding mention of a parameter has any outcome.

I'm withal stuck [edit]
